China Dominates the List of Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2026

Asia’s cocktail map is changing—and China is emerging as one of its most influential centres.
In the newly released Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2026, 18 bars from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan secured places in the Top 50. Together, they account for 36% of the entire list, giving the wider China market the strongest overall presence in this year’s ranking.
Four of them are ranked within the Top 10:
No.1 Hope & Sesame, Guangzhou
No.3 Bar Leone, Hong Kong
No.5 MO Bar Shenzhen, Shenzhen
No.10 Obsidian Bar, Shenzhen
The most significant result is the rise of Hope & Sesame in Guangzhou, which became the first bar from Mainland China to be named the best bar in Asia.
Known locally as 庙前冰室, Hope & Sesame is a hidden speakeasy tucked behind the façade of an old-style Cantonese café in Guangzhou’s Dongshankou neighbourhood. Its discreet entrance and nostalgic street-side setting create an unexpected contrast with the experimental cocktail bar inside, where local ingredients and Cantonese flavour memories are reinterpreted through contemporary techniques.
This combination of a hidden location, distinctive atmosphere and deeply local storytelling has made it more than a place for cocktails—it has become a destination that travellers actively seek out and photograph.
Its progression—from entering Asia’s 50 Best Bars in 2019 to reaching the global ranking and finally taking the No.1 position in Asia—reflects the rapid development of China’s cocktail industry.
But this year’s story is much bigger than the success of one venue.
From Established Bar Capitals to Emerging Cities
The 2026 ranking reveals a cocktail scene that is becoming both stronger and more geographically diverse.
Hong Kong remains one of Asia’s leading bar destinations, with Bar Leone at No.3, alongside Gokan, Coa, Mius, Argo, Montana and Penicillin. These venues range from neighbourhood-style cocktail bars and internationally recognised independent concepts to sophisticated luxury hotel bars.
At the same time, cities across Mainland China are making a much stronger impression.
Shenzhen places two bars in the Top 10—MO Bar Shenzhen at No.5 and Obsidian Bar at No.10—demonstrating how quickly the city’s hospitality and nightlife offering has evolved alongside its international business profile.
Shanghai is represented by Pony Up at No.19, while CMYK in Changsha reaches No.27 and Ralph’s Bar in Chengdu takes No.28. Beijing’s Tiao also enters the list at No.50.
Further south, Macau’s The St. Regis Bar ranks No.45, while bars in Taichung, Taipei and Tainan show that internationally recognised cocktail culture is no longer concentrated in only the most obvious gateway cities.

That is an important shift. It reflects the wider evolution of China’s urban travel landscape, where second-tier and emerging cities are increasingly offering design-led hotels, independent restaurants, cultural spaces and sophisticated nightlife experiences.
